The Full Story

In 'A Star Is Burns', Nelson writes a note on an Apple Newton PDA intending to say 'Beat up Martin' — the Newton's handwriting recognition confidently outputs 'Eat up Martha', turning a threat into absurdist nonsense. Apple engineers have cited this gag as a cautionary tale during iPhone autocorrect design reviews; autocorrect failures became a defining comedic feature of the smartphone era and a cultural institution from 2007 onward. The joke was the bug report.
