The Full Story

In 'E-I-E-I-(Annoyed Grunt)', Homer becomes a farmer and, using plutonium rods as a radiation source, accidentally crossbreeds a tomato and a tobacco plant, creating the addictive and foul-tasting 'tomacco'. In 2003, New Zealand farmer Rob Baur successfully grafted a real tomato-tobacco hybrid using the episode's exact botanical method; CRISPR gene-editing has since made engineered crop hybrids routine, and GMO food regulation remains one of the most contested policy areas in global agriculture.
